Text Neck + other news
Being stuck in this pandemic is leaving us a little bored, isn’t it?
We are getting very little social interaction…
No restaurants, no get togethers…
(Remember, social connection is paramount to happiness. I wrote about this here)
Although there is not much we can do about the isolation right now,
It unfortunately puts us in a precarious position where we are on our phones and devices all the time.
And thus, our necks and backs suffer.
Here is an article that was written for CNN, talking about what we call in our office, “text neck”. https://www.cnn.com/2014/11/20/health/texting-spine-neck-study/index.html
You see, when you are looking down all the time, “bending your head to look at your mobile device can put up to 60 pounds of pressure on your neck.
“The average human head weighs 10 pounds in a neutral position – when your ears are over your shoulders. For every inch you tilt your head forward, the pressure on your spine doubles.
“So if you’re looking at a smartphone in your lap, your neck is holding up what feels like 20 or 30 pounds.”
As you stretch the tissue for a long time, this can lead to “muscle strain, disc herniations and pinched nerves”.
Does this sound like you even just a bit?
It’s not realistic to think we will stop using our smartphones anytime soon but if this does sound like you, please be aware of your posture and try to keep your head up – think of a military person’s posture.
Make sense? Contact us know if you need our help. We can go over postural exercises with you that can easily be done at home as an example.
In fact, want some quick stretches to do for your neck? Check out this short video Dr. Cook just posted on our instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/p/CZNV1aFvhjr/
